The Nice Guy

In pop psychology, the nice guy is an adult male who is friendly yet unassertive in relationships with women. He gives emotional support, avoids confrontation, puts others' needs before his own, and generally treats women well. Who first used the phrase "nice guys finish last"? More...

Gertrude of Merania Killed by Discontented Hungarian Nobles (1213)

The first wife of Andrew II of Hungary, Gertrude played an active role in the political machinations of his early reign. While her husband was off on a military campaign, Gertrude was murdered by a group of discontented nobles. The unsavory affair served as the inspiration for what Hungarian composer's famous opera, Bánk bán? More...

Her short story, "The Two Offers," was probably the first such published work by any African American. How old was she when she published her first novel? More...

John Filson (1747-1788)
