Big Ben

Big Ben is the nickname of the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster in London. Famous for its accuracy, the clock rings in the new year in England. Originally, only the Great Bell—the largest bell in the tower—was called "Big Ben," but eventually, the moniker was applied to the clock itself and then to the entire tower. Robert Kennedy Dies from Gunshot Wounds (1968)

Five years after US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, his younger brother, Senator Robert Kennedy, was shot and killed by a man named Sirhan Sirhan. D-Day (2017)

This day marks the start of the Allied invasion of occupied France in 1944, which led to the final defeat of Hitler's Germany the following May. About 3,000 ships transported 130,000 British, Canadian, and American troops across the English Channel to land on the beaches of Normandy. Airborne troops began parachuting into Normandy at 15 minutes past midnight on June 6, and Landing Craft Transports plowed through the surf to spill troops onto the beaches. About 10,000 troops were killed or wounded that day. Each year, simple ceremonies at the Normandy cemeteries commemorate the men who fell. More...

Peer Review under Fire

In the first decade of the 21st century, the number of scientific journal article retractions rose more than 10-fold, raising serious questions about the peer-review process. Critics say that part of the problem is that study authors frequently omit some of the data from their papers, making it difficult for peer reviewers to accurately assess the work, especially when the papers employ complex, highly specialized techniques. In addition, a third of scientists, according to a 2009 report, admit to modifying their research results in order to improve the outcomes. More...
