The Crater of Diamonds

Situated over an eroded volcanic pipe in Arkansas, Crater of Diamonds State Park is the world's only diamond-bearing site open to the public. The park features a 37-acre plowed field where visitors can prospect for diamonds and other gemstones. Moreover, they may keep whatever they find regardless of value. The Great Blondin Crosses Niagara Falls on Tightrope (1859)

Best known as "The Great Blondin," Jean François Gravelet was a French tightrope walker and acrobat famous for making multiple crossings of Niagara Falls on a tightrope on several occasions. National Basque Festival (2017)

This sports-music-dance-barbecue celebration of Basque heritage has been held annually since 1962 in Elko, Nevada. Participants in the festival wear the traditional red, white, and green of the Basque provinces of Spain. The men also wear the traditional Basque beret. The festival begins on Friday with social and exhibition dancing. On Saturday there's a parade of more than 50 floats, and major contests of weightlifting, sheepdog-working, and dancing the native jota. "Drastic Action" Needed to Contain Ebola Outbreak in West Africa

The World Health Organization is calling for "drastic action" to contain the outbreak of Ebola currently raging in West Africa. Since the outbreak began four months ago, it has spread from Guinea to nearby Sierra Leone and Liberia, infected more than 600 people, and claimed nearly 400 lives, making it the largest Ebola outbreak in terms of cases, deaths, and geographical spread. Despite the presence of 150 experts, the number of reported cases and deaths is still rising daily, threatening the entire region and beyond. The charity Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, says the outbreak is out of control. More...
