The Birdman of Easter Island

Tangata Manu, or "Birdman," was the title given to the winner of an annual ritual competition practiced by Easter Island natives up until Christian missionaries suppressed it in the 1860s. The object of the contest was the retrieval of the first sooty tern egg of the season from the cliffs of a rocky islet off the coast of the main island. The winner's clan received the right to collect that season's harvest of wild bird eggs, while the Birdman himself was afforded what privileges? More...

The Battle of Cold Harbor Ends (1864)

Cold Harbor was one of the bloodiest and most lopsided engagements of the US Civil War. As many as 13,000 Union soldiers were killed, injured, or captured in the assault on the fortified Confederate line, whereas the Confederates suffered only a few thousand casualties. After two weeks of battle, Union General Ulysses S. Grant decided he could not justify his losses and ordered a retreat, later expressing regret over the disastrous assault. Whose remains did soldiers discover while entrenching? More...

Harriet Martineau (1802)

A chronically ill woman who lost her hearing in childhood, Martineau nevertheless went on to become a prolific and enormously popular English author. The sister of a minister, she first published articles on religious subjects, but it was her series of books on economics written for the layman that brought her renown. After a visit to the US in 1834, she became an abolition advocate and wrote several critical works on American culture. When she died in 1876, who wrote her obituary? More...

Philippines Independence Day (2017)

Emilio Aguinaldo (1869-1964) declared the Philippines independent on June 12, 1898. But the U.S. acquired the islands in 1899, and it wasn't until July 4, 1946 that they were granted full independence. For many years, Filipinos set aside July 4 to celebrate their independence; in 1962 the date was changed to June 12. Independence Day ceremonies in Manila include a military parade and the pealing of church bells. After the ceremonies are over, Filipinos devote the remainder of the day to recreation. There are games and athletic competitions, fireworks displays, and Independence Day balls. More...

Makers of Stuxnet and Flame Viruses Collaborated

Computer security experts say that they have found proof to back up the speculation that the Flame and Stuxnet computer viruses are linked. It was reported last month that a virus known as Flame was launched in an alleged cyber-attack against Iran's disputed nuclear program. Researchers say that part of the code from Flame is nearly identical to a portion of the 2009 version of a malware program called Stuxnet. The experts say the evidence suggests that the two viruses were developed by different teams that worked together at an early stage. The new findings could support claims that the US is using the viruses as part of a cyber-espionage program. More...
