Peter Abelard

Abelard was a 12th-century French philosopher and teacher whose career was derailed by a scandalous relationship with a tutee named Heloise. After a son and a secret marriage, Abelard sent Heloise to a convent to protect her from her disapproving family. In response, her uncle had Abelard castrated. Heloise became an abbess, while Abelard sought refuge as a monk. After his first theological work was burned as heretical, he established a monastery and resumed teaching. What were his last words? Burning of the USS Philadelphia (1804)

The USS Philadelphia was a 36-gun frigate that ran aground in October 1803 while blockading the coast of Tripoli. After some consideration, the Americans decided that the ship was too powerful a weapon to remain in enemy hands and sent a party of soldiers to recapture the ship and burn it. In carrying out "the most bold and daring act of the age," the assaulting party used what ruse to sail up to the ship without arousing the suspicion of its Tripolitan guards? More...

He held that new species are formed chiefly through mutations—sudden, unpredictable, inheritable changes in an individual organism. Teaching at the University of Amsterdam, he introduced the experimental study of evolution. What important evolution-related term did he introduce to science? More...

Large-scale public celebrations—including mass gymnastics displays, musical performances, fireworks, and military demonstrations—are centered in the capital city of Pyongyang. Special horticultural exhibitions feature the Kimjongilia, a flower cultivated to bloom around Kim's birthday. The government also often marks his birthday by allotting North Koreans extra food or electricity. More...

Parents Fail to Adequately Monitor Kids on Mobile Devices

A vast majority of English parents say they have spoken to their children about Internet safety when using mobile devices, but most still allow their children to use smartphones and tablets unsupervised. Parents tend to be more lax when it comes to installing parental controls and monitoring their children's online activity on such devices, perhaps believing that mobile devices pose less of a risk to children than standard computers. In fact, according to a recent survey, nearly 20 percent of children admitted viewing something on a mobile device that they found to be upsetting. More...
