The Aleppo Codex

The Aleppo Codex is one of the oldest manuscripts of the Masoretic Hebrew Bible. The scribe Shlomo ben Buya'a copied the text of the Codex circa 920 CE. It was delivered to the Karaite community of Jerusalem in the 11th century but was looted and taken to Cairo, Egypt. There, it was consulted by Maimonides, the most influential Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. Later, it was taken to Aleppo, Syria, where the community guarded it zealously for 600 years. Decimal Day (1971)

Financial calculations using the old currency of the UK were complicated, as one pound was made up of 240 pence or 20 shillings, a shilling was equal to 12 pence, and the half-crown was worth two shillings and sixpence. After considering decimalization for over a century, Parliament passed the Decimal Currency Act in 1969. Lupercalia (2017)

This was an ancient Roman festival during which worshippers gathered at a grotto on the Palatine Hill in Rome called the Lupercal. The sacrifice of goats and dogs to the Roman deities Lupercus and Faunus was part of the ceremony. Luperci (priests of Lupercus) dressed in goatskins and, smeared with the sacrificial blood, would run about striking women with thongs of goat skin. This was thought to assure them of fertility and an easy delivery. The name for these thongs—februa—meant "means of purification" and eventually gave the month of February its name. More...

Indian Prime Minister Opposes Temple in His Honor

Thanks to the donations of hundreds of people in Rajkot, India, a temple has been built in honor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—and he is reportedly "appalled" by the gesture. The temple features a seated statue of Modi and a wind gauge shaped like a lotus, the symbol of his political party. This week, however, Modi spoke out against the shrine, insisting that such worship goes against Indian tradition. Some of his followers remain undeterred and continue to worship him, while others plan to replace the Modi statue with that of a Hindu god. More...
