Russkaya Pravda

The Russkaya Pravda was the legal code that grew out of common law and the feudal regulations of the medieval state known as Kievean Rus, the earliest predecessor of modern Ukraine and Russia. Codified by Yaroslav the Wise in the 11th century, it bears a resemblance to contemporary German law but is unique in its omission of capital punishment. Sir Francis Drake Begins Circumnavigation of the Globe (1577)

Drake, an English buccaneer and navigator, set out in 1577 with five ships to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. After abandoning two ships, he navigated the Straits of Magellan with the remaining three, becoming the first Englishman to do so. Another ship was destroyed in a storm, and a fourth returned to England, but Drake continued alone up the coast of S America, crossed the Pacific, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and arrived in England in 1580. Malta Republic Day (2016)

On September 21, 1964, Malta was granted its independence from Britain. According to its constitution, Queen Elizabeth II would initially serve as the supreme leader of Malta. On December 13, 1974, Malta became a republic within the Commonwealth, with the President as head of state. To commemorate this day, December 13 has been declared Republic Day in Malta. A big feast is held and Malta's National Anthem is played or sung at the end of all masses. Gene Therapy Success Means Hope for Hemophiliacs

Hemophilia is a genetic blood disorder in which clotting ability is impaired, resulting in excessive bleeding. The second most common form of the disease, hemophilia B, is caused by a deficiency of coagulation factor IX and is treated with infusions of factor IX as often as several times a week. However, a new gene therapy treatment could offer hemophiliacs a long-term solution. Six hemophilia B patients who normally produce clotting factor IX at less than 1 percent of normal levels were injected with a virus modified to carry working versions of the factor IX gene to liver cells. After injection, factor IX levels rose as high as 12 percent of normal. More...
