Leishmaniasis

Spread by the bite of a bloodsucking sand fly, leishmaniasis is a tropical disease caused by parasitic protozoans. The cutaneous form of the disease causes deep, disfiguring lesions at the site of the bite, most of which heal spontaneously months later. The visceral form of the disease—also known as kala-azar—affects the internal organs and is usually fatal. Currently, there is no vaccine that can prevent leishmaniasis. The Battle of Nineveh (627 CE)

The Battle of Nineveh was fought between the Byzantine Empire and the Sassanid Dynasty, the last dynasty of native rulers to reign in Persia. Heraclius, the Byzantine emperor, was able to draw his Persian adversaries onto a favorable battlefield by feigning a retreat, thereby securing victory for his troops. Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (United States) (2017)

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated by Roman Catholics in the southwestern United States, where the Spanish influence is still strong. At the pueblo just north of Taos, New Mexico, there is an impressive torchlight procession on December 12. At the Jemez Pueblo, matachines (clowns or buffoons) perform a variety of ceremonial dances. At churches and plazas throughout New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona, such traditional Native American dances as the arc and arrow, gourd, braid, feather, palm, owl, and snake dances are performed on this day. Education Study Reveals Math, Science, and Reading Rankings

Educators and students the world over deserve a pat on the back, as tests show that student achievement has generally improved over the past decade. Elementary school students in a number of relatively wealthy Asian nations are the world's top performers in math and science, a reflection, it would seem, of those societies' commitment to primary education. These students also showed marked improvements in literacy thanks to the combined efforts of both educators and parents, but Russia, the US, and a number of European countries still took most of the top spots in reading .
