The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre

During the French Wars of Religion, Catherine de Médici plotted to have Gaspard II de Coligny—leader of the French Protestants known as Huguenots—assassinated. When the attempt failed, she convinced King Charles IX to murder all of the Huguenot leaders, who were in Paris for the wedding of the future Henry IV. The massacre began on August 24—St. Bartholomew's Day—and spread to the provinces. By October, tens of thousands of Huguenots had been killed. Why was Catherine able to influence Charles? More...

Zambia Gains Independence (1964)

The area that is now Zambia came under British control in the early 1900s with the development of the copper mining industry. Zambia may have been the first country to do what during the Olympics? More...

Annie Edson Taylor (1838)

On her 63rd birthday, Taylor became the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel. The interior of the barrel was cushioned and the air was compressed with a bicycle pump. Before her trip, Taylor sent a cat over the falls in her barrel—and it lived. Days later, she drifted over the falls in the same barrel and walked away from the plunge with minor injuries. However, she did not significantly profit from the stunt. According to some accounts, her barrel was stolen by whom? More...

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)

Labor and youth organizations march along with the armed forces with dancing and music. Various tribal dances from all over the country are performed in Independence Stadium, and there are gymnastics performances by children. October 24 is also the occasion for the final game of the annual Independence Soccer Trophy. More...

New Radar Can See Through Walls

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new kind of radar technology that could help soldiers by allowing them to see through solid walls. Radar, a method of detecting the position, movement, and nature of a remote object by means of reflected radio waves, is often impeded by concrete, which largely blocks the waves. However, by using short waves known as S-band waves and powerful signal amplifiers, the MIT team was able to get the signal to penetrate concrete and cinder-block walls and generate real-time videos of people moving behind them.
