Pattens

Pattens are various types of wooden-soled footwear, such as sandals or clogs, worn by men and women of the Middle Ages to increase their height or to keep their feet out of the mud or dirt of the street. In use until the early 20th century, pattens were worn outdoors over normal shoes and held in place by leather or cloth bands. In 1984, five people were killed and over 30 injured when a bomb tore through a hotel in Brighton, England, where Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet were staying for a conference. Shemini Atzeret (2017)

Shemini Atzeret, or "eighth day of solemn assembly," is actually the eighth day of the festival of Sukkot, but it is celebrated as a separate holiday dedicated to the love of God. The second day of Shemini Atzeret is known as Simhat Torah and is also celebrated separately by Orthodox and Conservative Jews. Most Reform Jews celebrate Shemini Atzeret concurrently with Simhat Torah. It is also one of four Jewish holidays on which the Yizkor, or memorial rite for the dead, is observed. The other three are Yom Kippur, the second day of Shavuot, and the last day of Passover. More...

Supplements Linked to Higher Mortality in Older Women

Experts have suspected for some time that supplements are beneficial only if a person has a specific vitamin or nutrient deficiency and that excessive intake of vitamins could even be harmful, and the results of a new study seem to support their suspicions. It found that well-nourished women in their 50s and 60s who took multivitamins or certain dietary supplements had a slightly increased risk of dying at an earlier age. Of the 15 supplements studied, iron was most strongly linked to an increased risk of earlier death. The only supplement associated with a lower risk of death was calcium. More...
