Personal Space

Though personal space boundaries vary somewhat in different cultures, coming within about 3 feet (1 m) of a stranger is generally viewed as socially unacceptable. Intrusions into the area that an individual psychologically regards as his or her own can prompt strong emotional reactions. To cope in crowded environments, people may avoid acknowledging each other. Such reactions are thought to be governed by the amygdala, a region of the brain. What can happen to a person whose amygdala is damaged? More...

Galileo Galilei Discovers Three of Jupiter's Four Largest Moons (1610)

Jupiter has more than 60 moons. The four largest—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto—were the first satellites of a planet other than Earth to be detected. They were discovered by Galileo in 1610, shortly after he invented the telescope, and are therefore known as the Galilean satellites. On January 7, 1610, Galileo observed near Jupiter what he described at the time as "three fixed stars, totally invisible by their smallness." How long did it take Galileo to discover the fourth? Along with her folklore collections, she also wrote four novels, including the influential Their Eyes Were Watching God. Why did the book inspire controversy? More...

Christmas (Russian Orthodox) (2017)

This celebration of the birth of Jesus is observed by the Russian Orthodox Church under the Julian calendar, which trails behind the Gregorian calendar by 13 days. In 1991, after the Soviet Union had been officially dissolved, Christmas was observed openly and as a state holiday in Russia for the first time in 70 years. In Moscow, banners were strung up and Nativity scenes were displayed in Red Square. On Christmas Eve, tens of thousands jammed Red Square for performances by choirs and bellringers and gala fireworks. Midnight services were celebrated in churches. More...

Unique Martian Meteorite Points to Wetter Planet

A two-billion-year old, coal-colored Martian meteorite points to the possibility that life could have existed on Mars. The meteorite, found in the Moroccan desert in 2011, is different from all others that have come from the Red Planet in both texture and chemical composition. One of the main differences is that it contains about 10 times more water than the most water-rich Martian specimens. This indicates that there was a greater abundance of water on Mars at the time, perhaps great enough to have harbored life. More...
