Ragtime

Ragtime is a style of American piano music emphasizing syncopation and polyrhythm. Popular in the early 20th century, it was the first form of jazz to exert a wide appeal—thanks, in part, to Scott Joplin and Irving Berlin, its most celebrated composers and performers. In a ragtime composition, the pianist's left hand keeps an accented beat while the right hand plays a fast, bouncing melody that gives the music its powerful forward impetus. Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss Premieres (1911)

Still regularly performed, Der Rosenkavalier is one of the most acclaimed comic operas of Richard Strauss, the leading composer of romantic opera in the early 20th century. In 1982, he launched his "Newman's Own" line of food products, donating the profits to various charitable causes. Why was Newman once placed on Richard Nixon's enemies list? More...

Art Bust Yields Thousands of Ancient Artifacts

Italian and Swiss police have recovered more than 5,000 artifacts—worth over $57 million—as the result of a recent art trafficking bust of five art warehouses in Basel, Switzerland. The artifacts, dating from the 8th century BCE to the 3rd century CE, include Greek and Roman vases, statues, and frescoes originally uncovered in secret archaeological digs on Italian islands like Sardinia and Sicily. The raid led to the arrest of a married couple accused of selling the pieces—labeled with bogus origins—to collectors and museums in the US, England, Germany, Japan, and Australia. More...
