The Nakhla Meteorite

The planet Mars has long fascinated humans, so people were understandably excited when a Martian meteorite landed in Nakhla, Egypt, near Alexandria on June 28, 1911. Containing carbonates and hydrous minerals formed by chemical reactions in water, the Nakhla Meteorite was the first ever to suggest the presence of water on Mars. Dr. James Bedford Becomes First Person to Undergo Cryopreservation (1967)

The field of cryonics involves techniques in which cold is applied for a variety of therapeutic goals, including brief local anesthesia, destruction of superficial skin lesions, and preservation of cells, tissue, and organs—or the entire body—in the hope that healing and resuscitation may be possible in the future. Zanzibar Revolution Day (2017)

In December 1963, the African island of Zanzibar won independence from England. On January 12, 1964, a revolution led by John Okello of the Afro-Shirazi Party overthrew the sultan who ruled Zanzibar. Abeid Karume was named president and the country's name changed to the People's Republic of Zanzibar (now a semiautonomous part of Tanzania since merging with neighboring Tanganyika). Zanzibar Revolution Day marks the occasion of the revolt that installed Karume as president. Celebrations are held at the Amaan Stadium and a wreath is officially placed at the gravesite of Abeid Karume. More...

Fad Diets Can Work

If you want to lose weight in 2014, you are going to have to work for it. Regardless of which diet one follows, and there are countless to choose from, the key is sticking to it. Researchers say even "fad" diets like the Paleo diet, a nutritional plan based on the presumed diet of the hunter-gatherer of long ago, and the 5:2 diet, which restricts followers to as little as 400 calories on two "fasting" days each week, can lead to weight loss, so long as the dieter does not stray from the plan.
